Original Drawings

What is an “Original”?

Original drawings are one-of-a-kind pieces of art, meaning there is only one in existence, and there will never be another piece of art exactly like it. Each of my original drawings available for purchase were painstakingly drawn by hand with black ink on a white canvas background.

Behind The Scenes

My process starts with a photo or scene that catches my eye. I feel inspired! Now what…

I start with a loose sketch - as loose as can be. In these sketches I’m looking for the gestures of a drawing and seeing where each part wants to be. From there, I sketch some guiding lines very lightly on the canvas - just a few - to show me where to place ink, eventually.

Then, I go in with pen and let the ink flow fluidly. I work really close to the canvas and take time with both the edges of the line itself and the edges of the entire canvas. Details matter!

I step back throughout this process to get a glimpse of the bigger picture that’s forming. It’s important to me that my drawings simultaneously catch the eye from a distance and draw viewers in close with delicious surface details.

I’m often told that the way I create is bold or brazen, since I work directly on the canvas with ink - there is no margin for error! I don’t think this way of working is particularly bold… When a seeming “mistake” crops up unexpectedly, I respond. The image and I dance together, back and forth.

I think this process lends my drawings a certain flexibility alongside their rigidity. Through this process that incorporates both control and spontaneity, I often stumble on inspiration in ways I could never foresee at the start.

In addition, when a piece is finished, it still has a lot to teach me. I often put finished drawings up on the wall of my studio and consider them for a while before releasing them into the world.  There is much to see if we’re looking, carefully.

While at first glance, my images are seemingly simple explorations of outdoor sport, there are plenty of metaphors swimming beneath the surface for anyone who wants to reach for them. That being said, if you like one of my drawings because it’s simply an image of something you love, I’m here for that too!  No further explanation needed.

In addition to original works on canvas, I also offer a wide range reproductions in various formats and price points:
