“ Hurriedly, I walk along, trying to stay present to the beauty around me, watching dark clouds move closer and closer, until I come across a fallen log, smooth and weathered from sun and from time. I observe the light and shadow on its surface. I see its limbs reach out across the sky and towards the water, now inaccessible. It rests on the sand and round rocks of the shoreline, nestled among the young willows swaying at the confluence of the gold dry grass and deep blue of the river. It’s beautiful and fractured. I want to draw this.
I have to be quick, so I set down the scene with fast strokes. The tree limb. Suggestions of a river’s flow. A line to mark the grove of cottonwoods on the shoreline across from us. Tangled clouds.”
